Twenty five years after her death, Dra. Evelina Antonetty was honored with a new TATS CRU mural outside of United Bronx Parents, the groundbreaking community and social-services group she founded. Bio, Nicer and BG executed their masterpiece using several iconic black and white South Bronx photos supplied by Joe Conzo, Antonetty’s grandson. Among them are shots from Charlotte Street and a snap of two kids dancing in Kilmer Park, taken during a Tito Puente concert. Plans are to paint a companion piece that will depict the communty as it exists today – and in color.

A Hayes Alum Makes Good

Seis Del Sur’s very own David Gonzalez has been inducted into the Cardinal Hayes High School Hall of Fame in the Bronx. David graduated from the school in 1975 and went on to be journalist with the New York Times and is now co-editing the Lens blog for the paper. According to the website the criteria for nomination is as follows;

“Hayesmen are an accomplished group. Many have made important contributions to service organizations, to their community, and to Cardinal Hayes. In recognition of outstanding efforts by alumni as well as by friends affiliated with Hayes, the alumni association honors them at the annual Hall of Fame Dinner/Dance.”

Los Seis congratulate David in receiving this nomination, a much deserved recognition for one of our own. Los Seis will gladly pay anyone for video tape of David getting his groove on.

Enfoco: An Evening of Art and Cocktails

Enfoco is close to realizing a dream of a national traveling exhibition and a book. Miriam Romais, Executive Director of Enfoco explains below;

“We received an “American Masterpiece” grant from NEA, (National Endowment for the Arts), but are still quite a ways from meeting the full match for our Permanent Collection project, and this after three years + of trying to raise funds and grant writing like mad for it. I am now reaching out with a passionate plea to folks that love us and care about our artists, as we only have until December to raise the dough. I’ve been working on this particular project for about 15 years… we are so close to realizing a book and nationally traveling exhibit I can almost taste it. Can you imagine, a book that chronicles the movement?”

Enfoco is holding a fundraiser, but if you can’t make it we urge people to make a donation and help realize their dream.

Not to be outdone by the smoove days frozen through Conzo’s relentless chronicling of the Cold Crush (and rivals), he turned the cameras on Steffan “Mr. WIiggles” Clemente, who it is rumored copped his Tuttin’ style and Popper poise from Ricky “El Gato de Longwood” Flores. Here he gives a dance and history workshop at a llibrary in Sofia.

Los Seis In The Place To Be – The NYT

Last week, Los Seis drew another curious crowd, eager to learn about the hidden history of the SBX and our peeps. Some 100 pepole – from activists to artists and journalists – filled the 15th Floor conference room at the NY Times, where Los Seis had a slide show followed by a feisty dicussion.

The last question came from a Brooklyn (figures) fotog, who said our work was stereotypical. Why didn’t we show pictures of people eating turkey dinner at home, like Norman Rockwell. There was some back and forth, esp from Ricky and Franco, while audience members said: “What Stereotypes? That’s my life!”

Adi Talwar of the Bronx News Network documented the event, and he posted a time lapse of the show on the BNN site.

David went home looking for the foto of Lolita, Rafael, Erwin and Oscar after they shot up the Congress, thinking maybe they were sharing a Rockwellesque moment. Apart from Cancel Miranda’s “Y tu, que?” look, there was no turkey to be seen.

But speaking of pavos…..

The New York Times Latino Affinity Group has invited Los Seis to do a slide show and panel discussion on our South Bronx images. Learn how we cris-crossed the same streets in the 80s, unknown to each other, compiling an insider’s archive of life in this hectic, crazy, beguiling and – yes – beautiful place. The event will take place on Thursday, September 29, from 5 to 7 PM at the NYT, 620 8th Avenue, 15th Floor Conference Room. There will be free refreshments and snacks.
